Grand Canyon National Park is the 15th United States site to have been declared a national park. The park encompasses a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often regarded as one of the Wonders of the World.
Grand Canyon is one of the most frequented tourist spot in the world, witnessing over six million visitors in 2017 alone. In 1979 the park was affirmed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is situated in northwestern Arizona.
There are two public areas of Grand Canyon National Park, the North and South Rims. At 7,000 feet above sea level, the Grand Canyon South Rim is the most accessible segment of the park, consisting of a multitude of areas where visitors can pull over to admire the views.
The Grand Canyon North Rim, 1,000 feet higher than its southern counterpart, isn’t as popular because it is harder to get to, especially when harsh winter weather closes access roads.
