Known as the Grand Canyon of the state of Colorado, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a wonder filled with beauty and dramatic landscapes. The park is managed by the National Park Service and is home to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rocks and roughest spires.
The park gets its name from its black-stained and lichen-covered walls. Black Canyon is assessed to have been formed over 1.7 billion years. It consists of numerous geological features including schist and Precambrian gneiss.
